Prompt: What is the most exciting thing about graduating high school for you personally? In your response, explain what you are looking forward to most after graduation (college, career, independence, travel, etc.) and why it matters to you.

The most exciting thing about graduating high school for me personally is the freedom, travels and time i'll have to myself and much more. I'm looking forward to going to college at Georgia State and being able to experience that and see what it's like to be able to be a Vet! I want to be "free" in the real world and experience things I couldn't with the time I'll get now that I would have graduated. I want to be able to travel the world and see things I've never seen. Graduating matters to me because school can sometimes be so draining and time consuming to the point I couldn't have time or energy for anything else and waste my days doing assignments for school or sleeping to get my energy back. So excited to graduate!

Think about a film that represents your culture (or a culture you identify with) in a positive and meaningful way. Explain how the film represents the culture and why this portrayal matters. Be sure to include specific examples from the film.

One film that can portray my Mexican culture would be the Coco Disney movie. This film represents how us Mexican celebrate a tradition called Dia De Los Muertos, plays a big part in Mexican tradition. In the film, it centers on a big Mexican family and how they work together and interact with themselves and others around them. They were often seen wearing traditional Mexican clothing and showing off tradition dances and typical food. This movie is a great example of Mexican culture in a positive and meaningful way.

Prompt: The short film Born With It shows how stereotypes can shape the way people see others and even how individuals see themselves. Reflect on the main character’s experience and explain how stereotypes impacted his identity and sense of belonging. Then, connect this to a broader idea: how can stereotypes influence the way a culture or group is understood by others? Use specific examples from the film to support your response.

The main character was a mixed African American Japanese who quickly got misjudged by color of skin by his Japanese light skinned peers and the kids often started bullying him because of how different he was from them calling him sick and saying he had AIDS. Stereotypes can impact one's way of identity and belonging if they easily get influenced. Stereotypes can make it hard for someone to try to fit in if people make it harder for the person to try.

How does your hair connect to your culture or your identity?

My hair connects to my identity because my friends and family members recognize me by my hair. My hair is often frizzy looking which makes my hair look different even if it's combed or done. Multiple times my hair has made me feel misunderstood and uncomfortable because many times people have told me "your hair looks so messy and un-brushed..". My hair is always brushed and taken care of but I'm not sure why it looks and gets frizzy no matter what I do. Though my hair has made me uncomfortable and misunderstood, it is still a big part of my identity and the way people know me.
